Mark Laverty and Alec McCulloch win prestigious Pamphlet Architecture award

Newcastle University students win prestigious award.

24 January 2022

Congratulations to MArch students Mark Laverty and Alec McCulloch who have won second prize in the prestigious Pamphlet Architecture competition.

Their submission "The Haunting of Number 12" was prompted by the authors' displacement from their studios during the COVID-19 lockdown and focused on their own shared Victorian terraced house in Newcastle. "The Haunting of Number 12" explored the turbulent history of the house and exposed its hidden narratives. The project offered a reflective position on the lockdown period to explore the difficult realities of displacement in order to reclaim a sense of place.

For over 35 years, Pamphlet Architecture have challenged architecture's conventional wisdom. Pamphlet asks practitioners and theorists to present their bold ideas in a manner as visually provocative as it is intellectually compelling.
