Staff Profile
I have BA Hons Architecture and Master of Town Planning degrees from Newcastle University. Since 1999 I have worked in practice, in a variety of roles in the sphere of planning and sustainability, including 15 years as a self-employed consultant. As a strategic planning and policy specialist, I have worked with sustainability stakeholders to influence many regional strategies and local plans; and I have also helped local community organisations to shape planning outcomes in their area through development management and planning appeals.
My most recent previous role was as Senior Engagement & Impact Officer for Yorkshire & Humber Climate Commission (2022-25), co-ordinating and leading multi-disciplinary climate action. This included advocacy work around recent planning reforms including the Planning & Infrastructure Bill 2025 and the English Devolution Bill 2025. Before that I was Spatial Planning Lead for CPRE, the countryside charity (2020-22), with a focus on climate change and strategic planning.
In 2024-5 I was a member of a Strategic Planning Practiitoners' Group, convened by multi-disciplinary consultancy Prior+Partners and chaired by Catriona Riddell of Catriona Riddell Associates. This prepared and delivered recommendations to the UK Government on the future of strategic planning.
Having been an Associate Lecturer in Planning at Newcastle since 2021 I joined the University staff as a Lecturer in September 2025. As this is a part-time role I also develop and deliver training and facilitation in planning for communities and professionals on a self-employed basis.
I currently teach on the following modules.
Undergraduate modules:
- TCP1020 Environment and Sustainability
- TCP1028 Planning for a Better World
- TCP3053 Development Management
