Introduction
Neveen looks at architecture as an interface between healthy and sustainable indoors and outdoors environments. With a background in architecture and urban design, she integrates her research into teaching in the design studio and environmental design lectures at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. She is currently interested in the impact of the built environments on memory and well-being, and the implementation of Salutogenic theories in design. She has supervised 10 PhDs to completion and examined PhDs at over 25 universities nationally and internationally.
Neveen has edited a major book publication on the architecture and urban transformation of historic markets and over 100 original research journal articles, book chapters and refereed conference papers that reflect her main teaching and research. Her research highlights the relationships between Architectural design, building and urban performance simulation and energy consumption, human well-being and sustainability from a technical and environmental psychology perspective. you can find her publications and citations on https://scholar.google.co.uk/citations?user=aY6mHuUAAAAJ
She was invited to teach in a number of international universities such as Wuhan University-China, Cairo University-Egypt and in the UK in Dundee and Brighton University, and is currently a visiting scholar in Adelaide University, Australia
She has recently won the Architectural competition 'Cool Abu-Dhabi' with a group of her ex-PhD students in which urban performance simulations are used in design optimizations of the potential of cooling the environment using brine and salt from desalination plants as a desiccant coolant combined with Mangrove trees and fog nets to decrease humidity levels outdoors in shaded areas. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Ps3cuQoEqg
Her work also led to the funded AHRC project looking at the impact of sustainably conserving historical markets in the historical 19th century city centre of Cairo in collaboration with Cairo University-Egypt. She is currently working on an edited book on the urban and architectural impacts of historical markets of the middle east on daily life and perceptions of the urban life https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=daWFYy0m-C0.
Neveen Launched the MSc in Sustainable Buildings and Environments in 2012, and is its Director.
She is on the Editorial board and reviews for leading journal in the field of building and urban performance simulation and sustainable architectural design such as 'Renewable Energy' journal, Intelligent Buildings International Journal and Renewable Energy and Environmental Sustainability, Energies and International Journal for Architectural Research IJAR.
She is currently PI on a Wellcome Trust Funded project looking a the impact of environmental design on agitation in dementia patients. Previously she was a Co-PI in the EPSRC funded Energy Visualization for Carbon Reduction (E-Viz) Project value £1.1 million, www.eviz.org.uk and the AHRC funded projects on 'Sustainaing heritage of 19th century market halls in Egypt'
She has undertaken a number of consultancies and worked with architectural practice to look into integrating building and urban performance simulation in the architectural design studio and on reducing the carbon footprints of buildings including Hexham Abbey and the Double Skin Façade design of the New Northumbria Police Headquarters in Newcastle upon Tyne.
Neveen welcomes new PhD students and enjoys teaching in the design studio and integrating architectural science into building design for more vulnerable users
Neveen is currently serving as:
