Dr Neveen Hamza

Director MSc Advanced Architectural Design - Sustainable Buildings & Environment, Senior Lecturer in Architecture



Neveen is an Architect and a building scientist, She  integrates her research into teaching in the design studio and environmental design lectures at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. She is currently interested in the impact of the built environments on memory and well-being. She has supervised 10 PhDs to completion and examined PhDs at over 15 universities nationally and internationally.

Neveen has over 90 original research journal articles, book chapters and refereed conference papers that reflect her main teaching and research, highlighting the relationships between Architectural design, building performance simulation and energy consumption, human well-being and sustainability from a technical and social perspective. She was invited to teach in a number of International Universities such as Wuhan University-China, Cairo University-Egypt and in the UK in Dundee and Brighton University.

Neveen launched the Masters for Sustainable Buildings and Environments in 2012, and is its lead

She is on the Editorial board and reviews for leading journal in the field of building and urban performance simulation and sustainable architectural design such as  'Renewable Energy' journal, Intelligent Buildings International Journal  and Renewable Energy and Environmental Sustainability Journal

She is currently PI on a Wellcome Trust Funded project looking a the impact of environmental design on agitation in dementia patients. Previously she was PI on an AHRC funded project looking at 'Sustaining heritage in Cairo' and a  Co-PI in the EPSRC funded Energy Visualization for Carbon Reduction (E-Viz) Project value £1.1 million

She has undertaken a number of consultancies that look into integrating building performance simulation in the architectural design studio and on reducing the carbon footprints of buildings including Hexham Abbey and the New Northumbria Police Headquarters in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Neveen is currently serving as:

-An Associate Peer Reviewers College-Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC)

- Board member of  the International Building Performance Simulation Association-England (IBPSA-England)

-Board Director on The Tyne and Wear Building Preservation Trust

 Energy Conscious Facade design
 Synergy between Environmental Psychology in buildings, Facade design and architectural technologies
 The Impact of Building Regulations on the environmental performance of buildings

-Occupants Behaviour and Building Performance simulation in zero carbon buildings.
