Bathans, Brochs and Bothies
Studio led by John Kinsley in 2025-2026
A live build that starts with a tree…
“True Art is an epiphany; an enlightening spark dancing in the perceived gap between ourselves and everything else” Duane Preble, Professor Emeritus of Art, University of Hawaii.
Through designing and building together, we will try to understand how that ‘enlightening spark’ might enable connections across that ‘perceived gap’ – with others we work alongside, with the materials we build from, and with the place where we build.
The project is located in Abbey St Bathans, a small village in the Scottish Borders, situated in a long winding steep wooded valley that follows the Whiteadder Water. The hut is as defined by https://www.thousandhuts.org i.e. <30m2, off grid in terms of power, water supply and drainage , and intended for use as a holiday let.
