Climate Infrastructures

The UK takes many years to build infrastructure. For example, while work began on a new underground line across London – the Elizabeth Line – in 1987, it was only finished 35 years later, in 2022. By contrast, climate change is moving fast. Current predictions suggest that, by 2050, the world will be on average 1.5°c hotter than an 1850-1900 baseline. That is less than one Elizabeth Line away. By 2050, large parts of the UK are projected to flood annually. This studio asks what infrastructure we should build now to protect cities and existing infrastructures, or alternatively whether we should avoid expending carbon on concrete and steel now and instead anticipate how to live with climate changed landscapes.
