Celebrating our Basketball and Business Excellence Scholarship alumni and their journeys beyond university.

21 May 2026

Our alumni continue to make their mark across the sport and business world, building successful careers after completing their degree alongside a Basketball and Business Excellence scholarship.

Designed to support talented student athletes both academically and professionally, the scholarship opens doors to opportunities far beyond university, equipping students with the skills, confidence and networks needed to thrive in competitive industries.

Meet our Basketball and Business Excellence scholarship alumni

Our Basketball and Business Excellence scholarship students progress into a wide range of careers across sport, business and beyond, from leadership and management roles to entrepreneurship, coaching, marketing and professional sport.

Their stories showcase their success as individuals and highlight the diverse career pathways available through our programmes, inspiring current and prospective students to see what’s possible.

We caught up with our alumni to explore how their course and involvement in our basketball programme helped shape their career journeys.

From balancing academic study with life as a student athlete, to developing transferable skills now used in the workplace, they shared the lessons they’ve learned along the way, as well as giving some advice to inspire and inform future cohorts.

Austin Sacks

Occupation: Player Development Coach Associate

Course studied: International Business Management (Sustainability) MSc

How did your course and the basketball programme help you get to where you are now in your career?

My time at Newcastle University played a major role in shaping where I am today. Studying MSc International Business Management (Sustainability), gave me a strong understanding of global business, particularly in areas I’m passionate about such as sustainability and multinational enterprises.

Alongside my studies, being part of the basketball scholarship programme allowed me to compete at a high level while developing discipline, resilience, and consistency. Balancing professional basketball with a master’s degree prepared me for high-performance environments and helped me transition into my current role working for an NBA G-League team, the San Diego Clippers.

What advice would you give to those considering applying for the sport scholarship?

Definitely apply! The combination of high-level sport and a strong academic programme is unique, so be prepared to stay disciplined and manage your time well. At the same time, enjoy the experience. You’ll grow both personally and professionally while building relationships that can open doors in the future.

What skills did you learn either during your studies or as a student athlete that you now use at work?

The biggest skills I developed were discipline, time management, and adaptability. Balancing a master’s degree while playing professional basketball required strong organisation and focus. I also developed communication and teamwork skills, which are essential in my current role working in a professional sports environment.

How did being part of the basketball programme shape your personal and professional development?

The basketball programme helped me grow both personally and professionally by teaching me accountability, leadership, and how to perform under pressure. Playing overseas also exposed me to different cultures and environments, which helped me become more adaptable and open-minded.

How has your experience as a student athlete at Newcastle University shaped your long-term aspirations?

My experience at Newcastle broadened my perspective and helped me think more globally about my future. Long term, I aim to continue growing within professional basketball while also exploring opportunities that combine business, sport, and sustainability. My time at Newcastle showed me that I can build a career that aligns with both my passions and my professional goals.

What advice would you give to those considering applying for the sport scholarship?

I would strongly encourage anyone considering applying for the sport scholarship to go for it. It’s a unique opportunity to live in another country while continuing to play the sport you love at a high level. Experiences like this don’t come around often, and it was incredibly rewarding both personally and professionally for me.

What skills did you learn either during your studies or as a student athlete that you now use at work?

The biggest thing I learned was how to work as part of a team. Being a student athlete teaches you how to deal with different personalities, handle challenges, and work towards a shared goal, just like you can expect to experience in most jobs.

How did being part of the basketball programme shape your personal and professional development?

Being part of the basketball programme pushed me to be more consistent and accountable, not just to myself but to a team. You quickly learn how to deal with different personalities, handle pressure, and bounce back after tough losses.

Living and playing in a new environment also forced me to adapt and become more independent. All of that has carried over into my career, especially when it comes to working with others and staying level-headed in challenging situations.

How has your experience as a student athlete at Newcastle University shaped your long-term aspirations?

My experience at Newcastle University as a student athlete broadened my perspective and made me think more globally. It showed me that you’re not limited by your current environment or circumstances, and that there are opportunities out there if you’re willing to step outside your comfort zone.
