PROFILE
Dr Vu Trinh is a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in Finance at Newcastle University Business School (NUBS). Dr Trinh also serves as School Director of Researcher Development (acting in place of the Deputy Associate Dean for Research) and as Research and Impact (R&I) Lead for the Finance Subject Group. As Director of Researcher Development, Dr Trinh leads key areas of researcher development across the School, including research induction for new staff, the Funding Academy, ongoing professional development, and training for early career researchers and beyond. The role also involves deputising for the Associate Dean for Research. As R&I Lead for Finance Subject Group, Dr Trinh oversees research, scholarship, and impact activities within the Subject Group, alongside responsibility for PhD recruitment and the development of a vibrant doctoral research community. Externally, Dr Trinh serves as Deputy Director of the Finance and Banking Network at AVSE Global and as an Executive Member of the Corporate Governance Special Interest Group of the British Accounting and Finance Association (BAFA).
Dr Vu Trinh is an expert in sustainable finance, corporate governance, artificial intelligence in finance, and financial stability, with a particular focus on climate change risk, ESG integration, executive decision-making, and the technological transformation of financial markets. Dr Trinh’s work has been published in leading academic journals (CABS 4/3* | ABDC A*/A), including the British Journal of Management (CABS 4 | ABDC A*), Annals of Tourism Research (CABS 4 | ABDC A*), Energy Economics (CABS 3* | ABDC A*), Financial Review (CABS 3* | ABDC A), Journal of Financial Stability (CABS 3* | ABDC A), ABACUS (CABS 3* | ABDC A), European Journal of Finance (CABS 3* | ABDC A), and Business Strategy and the Environment (CABS 3* | ABDC A), among others.
Dr Trinh serves as Communications Editor for the British Journal of Management (CABS 4 | ABDC A*) and the International Journal of Management Reviews (CABS 3* | ABDC A*), and is also a Section Editor for SAGE Open (2022-2026) and an Associate Editor for several peer-reviewed journals, including Business Research Quarterly and The Journal of Business Perspective, among others. In addition, Dr Trinh is a member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Banking, Accounting and Finance. Dr Trinh has successfully co-edited special issues on Climate Governance, Green Innovation, and Investment Policies (International Review of Economics and Finance) and on Artificial Intelligence and the Sustainable Development Goals in Higher Education (International Journal of Educational Management). Dr Trinh also edited the book titled The Future of Accounting and Finance: Embracing Technology, Digitalisation, Sustainability, Education, and Employability (Springer, 2025/26), following the earlier edited book volume Climate Governance and Corporate Eco-innovation (Springer, 2024/25). Currently, Dr Trinh is sole editor of the forthcoming volume Smarter Finance: AI for a Sustainable Future (Springer), which will represent the fifth book in Dr Trinh’s academic career.
To date, Dr Trinh has secured over US$250,000 (£200,000) in research funding. Recent awards include US$115,000 (£90,000) as Phase 1 Lead for a Climate Compatible Growth (CCG) project on the macroeconomic impacts of low-carbon transitions in Vietnam (2024–2025), led by AVSE Global. Dr Trinh also co-leads a climate risk project funded by Nafosted (About £30,000) British Academy–Newton Fund Reciprocal Schemes), involving partners in the UK and Vietnam. As Principal Investigator at NUBS, Dr Trinh led a consultancy project on responsible investment in ASEAN funded by the OECD (US$30,000/£25,000), which produced a key policy report. Ongoing academic service income (approximately US$11,000 over 2022–04/2026) is generated through editorial work. Dr Trinh supervises several funded and self-funded PhD students and collaborates with leading academics and institutions on interdisciplinary sustainability-focused research initiatives.
Dr Trinh’s research has gained strong academic recognition, reflected in high citation and download rates. Several papers have ranked among the most cited and downloaded in the Journal of International Financial Markets, Institutions and Money (CABS 3* | ABDC A)and the European Journal of Finance (CABS 3* | ABDC A). P-Rank lists Dr Trinh among the top 1,000 researchers in the UK and Europe (#243 UK since 2022). Research has been presented at leading conferences (IFABS, BAFA, FMA, EAA) and cited by organisations including the OECD and WHO.
As a qualified educator, Dr Trinh serves on the QAA Advisory Group for the 2024–25 review of the Finance Subject Benchmark Statement. At Newcastle University, leadership roles have included Director of Researcher Development; Research, Scholarship and Impact Co-Lead and Research Cluster Co-Lead. Dr Trinh was a Fellow of the NUBS Funding Academy and contributes to programme review, PhD supervision, and mentoring schemes. Academic governance and recruitment activities have included serving as Deputy Chair of the Board of Examiners (2020/21).
Dr Trinh’s work has been recognised through several awards, including “Outstanding Researcher of the Year” at NUBS (2022) and two AVSE Global “Interstellar” Awards (2023 and 2024). Nominations for Education Awards include “Outstanding Contribution to Teaching” (2023), “Research Supervisor of the Year” (2024), “Outstanding Contribution to Teaching” (2025), and “Outstanding Contribution to Teaching” (2026 - in progress).

Dr Trinh was educated at the Universities of Newcastle [PhD in Finance/UK], Northumbria [MSc in Finance/UK with a distinction, ranked 2nd], and Economics HCMC (UEH) [BSc in Finance with first-class honours and top graduates]. PHD RESEARCH SUPERVISION
Dr Trinh is currently welcoming applications from prospective PhD students with a strong academic background and an outstanding research proposal in the following areas: corporate governance, sustainable finance, sustainable governance, corporate finance, banking, ESG, and related fields in finance.
Current PhD Students:
1. Youping Jia, MSc, PhD Candidate (Successfully passed his viva with minor corrections on November 2025)
Youping is a fourth-year PhD student currently in the writing-up stage of his dissertation, working under Dr Trinh's co-supervision. His research focuses on three critical areas: CEO narcissism, risk, and corporate performance. Briefly, Youping examines how CEO narcissism influences risk-taking behaviour and, consequently, affects corporate performance. His research offers valuable insights into the role of executive personality traits in shaping business strategies and outcomes. The findings are anticipated to be of significant interest to both academics and industry professionals.
2. Li Jinghui, MSc, PhD Candidate (Successfully passed her viva with minor corrections on December 2025)
Jinghui (Garnet) is a fourth-year PhD student currently in the writing-up stage of her dissertation, working under Dr Trinh's co-supervision. Her research is focused on three pivotal areas: CEO leadership, organisational culture, and corporate performance. Throughout her doctoral journey, Jinghui has examined the complex interactions between leadership styles and corporate culture, and how these factors collectively influence organisational performance. Her work offers critical insights into the role of executive leadership in shaping company culture and driving business success, contributing valuable perspectives to both academic research and practical management strategies.
Li Jinghui has been recognised as one of the Best Reviewers of 2024 by BRQ Business Research Quarterly (BRQ), the official peer-reviewed journal of the Spanish Academy of Management (ACEDE).
3. Yudian Chen, MSc, PhD Candidate (Year 4 - Writing up)

Briefly, Yudian investigates the relationship between sustainable practices and corporate performance, providing empirical evidence on how sustainability initiatives influence financial and non-financial outcomes. Her work contributes valuable insights to the growing body of literature on sustainability, offering practical implications for both academia and industry.

4. Ya Gao, MSc, PhD Candidate (Year 4 - Writing up)
Ya is a fourth-year PhD student working under Dr Trinh's primary supervision. Her research is centred on three key areas: political connections, sustainable practices, and corporate performance. Briefly, Ya investigates how political connections influence corporate strategies, particularly in the adoption of sustainable practices, and how these practices, in turn, impact corporate performance. Her work aims to provide a deeper understanding of the ways in which political and environmental factors shape business outcomes, offering valuable insights for both academia and industry.

5. Hend Alajai, MSc, PhD Candidate (Year 4 - Writing up)
Hend is a fourth-year PhD student currently in the writing-up stage of her dissertation, working under Dr Trinh's co-supervision. Her research is centered on three critical areas: earnings management, corporate social responsibility (CSR), and corporate performance. Throughout her PhD journey, her work not only explores the individual impact of earnings management and CSR on corporate performance but also examines how these factors interplay to influence organisational outcomes. Hend's research is particularly relevant in today's business environment, where the integration of ethical practices and financial performance is increasingly scrutinised. Her findings are expected to provide valuable insights for both scholars and practitioners in the field.
