On February 13th, 2024, the O2 City Hall in Newcastle welcomed the annual grand festival—the 2024 Northeast England Five-Universities Chinese New Year Gala. This event, organized by the Confucius Institute at Newcastle University in collaboration with the Chinese Student Associations of Newcastle University, Durham University, University of Sunderland, Northumbria University, and Teesside University, showcased the vibrant cultural heritage of China.

The event, which attracted thousands of attendees including international students, scholars, overseas Chinese, representatives from Chinese organizations, and foreign friends, received significant attention and support from consulates, municipal authorities, and universities.

The gala, themed "Soaring Dragons, Flourishing Times," featured three chapters: "Looking Back," "Competing Ships," and "Eternal Stars," presenting a diverse array of performances including instrumental music, dance, song, drama, and comedy. The collaborative effort of over 100 international students from the five universities brought a fusion of traditional and contemporary arts to the stage.

Special guests including Consul Liang Yan from the Chinese Consulate General in Manchester, Councillor Rob Higgins, Deputy Mayor of Newcastle, Professor Karen OBrien, President of Durham University, Professor Nigel Harkness, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Newcastle University, Dr. Andrea Wilczynski, Dean of the School of Modern Languages at Newcastle University, Mr. Shan Hung NG MBE, and directors from the Confucius Institute were in attendance.

The gala commenced with Consul Liang Yan delivering a bilingual opening speech, emphasizing the significance of cultural exchange between China and the UK. Deputy Mayor Rob Higgins extended warm greetings in Chinese, adding to the festive atmosphere.

In addition to distinguished guests, captivating performances delighted the audience. From traditional guzheng melodies to Broadway-style dances, and even a comedic skit, the gala offered a delightful blend of entertainment. A highlight was the debut of a crosstalk performance, showcasing the charm of this traditional Chinese art form.

As the evening progressed, the energy soared with the mesmerizing dragon and lion dance performances. The sight of the majestic dragon and playful lions filled the venue with excitement and joy.

The gala concluded with a heartwarming rendition of the song "Love Each Other," uniting all performers, guests, and audience members in a standing ovation.
