Chinese Philosophy on Paradoxical Issues Workshop

On October 26, the collaborative efforts of Confucius Institute at Newcastle University and the Business School led to the successful organization of a workshop titled "Understanding Paradox through Chinese Philosophy and Culture."

Held at Newcastle University Business School, the event brought together four distinguished scholars from various UK universities, including Dr. Emma Soane from the London School of Economics, Prof. Annie Chen from the University of Roehampton London, Dr. Mehrdad Sarhad from Teesside University, and Prof. Norman Peng from Glasgow Caledonia University. The workshop also saw the participation of three PhD students from Newcastle University.

Organized by Dr. Xin Li of Newcastle University, the workshop delved into the diverse applications of Chinese philosophies, such as Yin-Yang and Zhong-Yong, in addressing paradoxical tensions in research. Presentations covered a spectrum of topics, from sustainable urban development to the risks and benefits associated with paradox. The scholars expressed enthusiasm for integrating elements of Chinese philosophy into their research, acknowledging the insights gained.

The workshop facilitated meaningful discussions on the relevance of Chinese philosophy to management and organization research. Participants found the insights inspiring, with PhD students actively engaging in discussions on incorporating these ideas into their research.
