Photography and 'Quick Fix in China' Conference

The Confucius Institute at Newcastle University Successfully Hosted a Photography Exhibition and Series Conferences on 'Quick Fix in China'.

Confucius Institute (CI) at Newcastle University hosted an exhibition and a series of academic conferences from October 4th to 7th in 2023, focusing on the theme of "Quick Fix in China" The event covered a wide range of topics, including Chinese restoration, recycling, and creative upgrading. It attracted scholars and experts from various countries to engage in discussions on these cutting-edge subjects.

On October 4th, at 8:00 PM, an exceptional photography exhibition was inaugurated at the XL Gallery of Newcastle University. The exhibition featured a series of photography works with the theme "Quick Fix in China" by Dr. Bill Aitchison, Associate Professor at BNU-HKBU United International College. These works showcased China's unique practices and cultural context in the field of rapid restoration, reflecting the creativity of China when dealing with various everyday environment challenges.

On October 5th and 6th, a series of conferences and workshops with the theme "Quick Fix Strategies: Exploring Resilience and Sustainability" were held at the Hadrian Building of Newcastle University. The conference was chaired by Dr. Andrew Law, the International Director of CI.

On the afternoon of October 5th at 2:00 PM, the event began with a captivating lecture by Dr. Loretta Lou, Assistant Professor in the Department of Anthropology at Durham University. She spoke on "Sustainable practices in Hong Kong" Drawing from her extensive ethnographic research spanning a decade, Dr. Lou emphasized the principle of "Lead by example" and provided rich examples to demonstrate its central role in driving and developing the " Living Green " movement. Following her presentation, conference attendees engaged in an in-depth discussion with Dr. Lou regarding the concept of a special issue publication for the international journal "Worldwide Waste."

On October 6th, at the Hadrian Building, the conference continued with presentations from experts. Dr. Ollie Hemstock, Assistant Professor at the School of Design at Northumbria University, discussed global restoration technologies within transformation movements, offering a broad perspective. Subsequently, Dr. Bill Aitchison, Associate Professor from BNU-HKBU United International College, explored the "Quick Fix in China" topic, providing a detailed interpretation of rapid restoration developments and their cultural factors. Professor Hsingyuan Tsao from the University of British Columbia analyzed challenges in art upgrade circuits in the context of neoliberal culture, presenting creative ideas. Dr. Xinyu Liu from Loughborough University School of Business focused on the circular economy's applications and potential value in the business field. The event concluded with Dr. Andrew Law expressing appreciation for the outstanding presentations and discussing future directions for academic research and cooperation opportunities.

On October 7th, in continuation of the academic conference held in the previous two days, CI moved the event to the Star and Shadow Cinema. From 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, they organized a "Fix it Café" series of activities, bringing together practitioners in the field of restoration to share their experiences and skills.

During this series of events, CI provided participants with a platform for in-depth exploration and discussion of "Quick Fix" techniques and concepts. From expert analysis to vivid examples, attendees were deeply inspired and gained a deeper understanding of "Quick Fix."
