Translating & Interpreting MA (Chinese and English), Class of 2020
Why did you choose to study at Newcastle University?
Newcastle is home to one of the top three high-level interpreter training institutes. It offers top-notch interpretation facilities and practical opportunities with international organisations.
I was also drawn to the city of Newcastle, which combines modern conveniences with a rich history. The university's excellent student services and high efficiency impressed me a lot.
How do you think your course prepared you for your chosen career?
My course at Newcastle University provided me with a solid foundation for my language-related career. I was particularly drawn to language education. However, in China, most universities require a doctoral degree for teaching positions.
Newcastle's T&I MA is so competitive that I gained recognition and entered higher education. Also, the translation technology and game translation courses aided my work in game localisation.
What did you enjoy most about your time at Newcastle University?
As an international student, everything about Newcastle was new to me. The orientation week events were absolutely amazing. I visited the campus gallery all the time. I also enjoyed the Co-op, the bar and other convenient facilities on campus.
I benefited a lot from the free writing skills sessions and career service. But I particularly enjoyed Northern Stage, where I watched various fascinating plays. I even directed one with my classmates for our drama translation module!
Describe your time at Newcastle in three words
Enjoyable, inspirational and transformative.
