Meet Millie

Modern Languages, Translation and Interpreting BA, Class of 2019

Introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about what you've done since graduating

I graduated in 2019 and decided to stay at Newcastle for another year to do a Masters in Professional Translation. After finishing the Masters, I applied to jobs abroad and got an offer to work as an in-house translator in Liège, Belgium for a casino and sports betting operator.

I still work there now and a year ago I decided to start freelancing alongside.

Why did you choose to study at Newcastle University?

I was drawn to the fact that Newcastle gave the opportunity to study translation at undergraduate level, which was pretty unique when I was applying. The whole open day blew me away and it instantly felt like the right choice for me.

How do you think your course prepared you for your chosen career?

The translation aspect of my course helped me decide that was what I wanted to do as a career - and gave me lots of good foundational skills.

What did you enjoy most about your time at Newcastle University?

The city itself is fantastic and made for lots of fun when not studying. On campus, I loved studying in the language resource centre and the overall atmosphere at the School of Modern Languages.

The clubs and societies were also a big part of my university experience and I made memories I will always treasure with the Dance Club.

Describe your time at Newcastle in 3 words

Fun, intense, unforgettable.
