We're a diverse and multi-disciplinary team of internationally renowned East Asia experts. We work with colleagues in other schools who provide specialisms in the culture, politics and history of China, Japan and Korea.
We're proud to be one of only four leading higher education institutions in the UK to have been awarded exclusive, invitation-only membership to the Japan Foundation Nihongo Network ("Sakura network"). We promote Japanese language and culture in collaboration with local organisations.
Teaching quality
Newcastle University is a great place to pursue a Japanese language course. We're committed to academic excellence, teaching quality, and student experience.
Extra-curricular activities
We offer lots of extra-curricular activities during your Japanese university course, fostering intercultural exchange. This includes the student-run Anglo-Japanese Society and Modern Languages Society – both great ways to meet exchange students and explore new aspects of East Asian culture.
Tandem learning partnerships are also popular among our students. They're a great way to further enhance your language skills while studying Japanese at university.
We provide opportunities for students to take part in outreach activities at local schools and libraries, as well as the chance to engage with popular culture events. This helps to enhance your public speaking skills, communication and employability.
You can practice Japanese with native speakers on campus and join tandem learning partnerships, hosted by our partner universities in Japan. You'll also benefit from our Japan Foundation Nihongo Network ("Sakura network") membership.
