Charles Butler: Rethinking the Science of Teaching Music in Jacobean England

In this paper Dr Owens will present new information about Butler’s biography, offering reflections on the shape and structure of Butler’s The Principles of Musik in comparison to Morley’s Introduction, as well as addressing Butler’s teaching on mood and other concepts associated with pitch (notes, gamut, etc.), and consider his place in English pedagogy.
