NET 250 2026 List Finalised, Powered by Rigorous Research

This year’s NET 250 is back bigger and better, shining a spotlight on the North East’s most dynamic and successful organisations.

28 April 2026

The NET 250 campaign, launched in 2025, is an annual index of the North East’s top 250 businesses, ranked by turnover.

The research behind this year’s NET 250 has now been completed, with a student-led approach playing a central role in producing the data to inform the final list.

A rigorous research process

Students from Newcastle University Business School – selected from a competitive application process – led the study, with support from academic supervisor Aidan Beck, a lecturer in accounting at the Business School.

This year’s student project team consisted of:

  • Raichal Joju Panakkal, Finance MSc
  • Fabin Manu, Accounting, Finance and Financial Analysis MSc
  • Carly Martin, Accounting, Finance and Financial Analysis MSc
  • Will Lawson, Economics BSc

Aidan oversaw the students throughout the research process.

Data was sourced from various financial databases and other publicly available sources. Companies House data was used to confirm information and ensure impartiality and objectivity, with students recording factual data and identifying anomalies and queries requiring further investigation or clarification by Aidan, as project lead.

The work followed an agreed framework covering data collection, validation and reporting, with strict cut-off points for financial submissions and clear inclusion criteria.

Aidan said: “It's been a pleasure to be part of the NET 250 project again this year, and to supervise another team of strong student researchers who have consistently worked hard and been inquisitive and keen to produce high quality research throughout the process.

The completed list was subject to final checks before being formally audited by PwC and handed to NET, marking the conclusion of a structured research process carried out over several months.

Student Carly said: “I enjoyed learning more about the business landscape in the North East of England and working collaboratively with my peers. The project helped me learn how to navigate financial statements and see the concepts we learn in class applied to the real world. We saw real examples of how a company’s accounts can change year to year.”

Back bigger and better

Alongside the core categories from last year, there have been some new and exciting additions for 2026, including Highest Climber, Top 50 Breakthrough and Top Family-Owned Business, reflecting a broader view of performance and growth across the region.

Steven Hugill, NET Editor-in-Chief, said: “As a multi-platform publisher rooted in the North East, NET 250 is a crucial part of our portfolio.

“Detailing the top 250 businesses across our region by turnover, it showcases the organisations at the heart of major change and how their influence spreads far beyond the North East.

“And we’ve made some exciting changes to this year’s event, with a number of fresh award categories allowing us to highlight even more of our fantastic businesses.

“It has been a pleasure to work with Newcastle University Business School and PwC again to create the NET 250 list.”

John Duns, NET Business Development Director, added: “The research shows a depth and breadth of North East businesses that is far greater than many people realise.”

The official reveal

The NET 250 will be officially revealed at an awards breakfast on 14 May 2026 at the Hilton Newcastle Gateshead.
