Behavioural and Experimental Social Sciences Network (BESSN)

Using behavioural insights and experimental methods to understand how people make decisions and test ways to support better outcomes.

About the network

The Behavioural and Experimental Social Sciences Network (BESSN) brings together researchers who use behavioural insights to understand decision-making by individuals, businesses and governments.

Our interdisciplinary approach combines expertise in economics, finance, management, psychology and environmental science. We use experimental methods to investigate how decisions are made and test the effectiveness of interventions.

Understanding decision-making

We investigate how individuals, businesses and governments make decisions, drawing on behavioural insights and expertise from across the social sciences.

Testing what works

We use laboratory experiments, field studies and large-scale online survey experiments to understand behaviour and test the effectiveness of different interventions.

Our researchers also work with government, industry and third-sector organisations to apply behavioural research to real-world challenges and generate wider societal impact.

Who we are

The network brings together researchers from across Newcastle University with expertise in behavioural and experimental social science.
