About the network

Newcastle Crime, Institutions and Action (NCIA) brings together researchers working across crime, institutions, public policy, law enforcement, inequality and social harm.

Our interdisciplinary research explores how institutions shape behaviour, how public authorities respond to crime and disorder, and how these responses affect individuals, communities and markets.

What we do

Our work covers five interconnected areas:

Policing, trust and legitimacy

We examine police communication, public confidence, crime reporting and the relationships between citizens, law enforcement and other institutions.

Justice, enforcement and access

We investigate criminal justice and youth justice systems, recidivism, legal capacity, enforcement behaviour and the effectiveness of justice institutions.

Organised crime and illicit markets

We explore gangs, drug markets, organised criminal groups, violence and how criminal activity is organised across different places.

Financial crime and corruption

We investigate financial crime, tax and sanctions evasion, corruption and illicit financial flows, including how institutions detect, deter or enable these activities.

Economic inequality and crime

We examine how labour-market disruption, economic shocks, migration, segregation and social inequality can affect crime, victimisation and enforcement outcomes.

Through this work, NCIA aims to produce rigorous, policy-relevant evidence about crime and institutions and their wider social and economic impacts.

Who we are

NCIA brings together researchers from Newcastle University and partner institutions, with expertise spanning economics, accounting and financial management, law and related disciplines.
