Higher Education Skills

These sessions are designed to prepare you for aspects of higher education study which you may not have encountered while at school or college.

Since 2019, attendees have taken part in the following sessions below.

This flexible module can be completed at a time and pace that suits you. It will introduce you to various aspects of HE study, such as:

  • online, blended and flexible learning
  • university lectures
  • independent study
  • seminars and other teaching contexts
  • assessment and feedback

I really enjoyed the immersive learning element of the modules, it was very useful.

Live library tours

This session introduces the four libraries which make up Newcastle University Library, including:

  • the study spaces and facilities available across campus
  • how to find books and journals
  • the services available to all Newcastle University students

Referencing

While at university, it's very important that every significant source of information should be formally acknowledged, whether you employ your own words or quote directly.

This session aims to introduce the skillset of academic referencing and will give some practice in referencing in the 'Harvard at Newcastle' style.

Critical analysis

Critical analysis is an essential skill to develop, no matter what subject you aim to study. This session introduces attendees to critical analysis, including what it is and why it's important at university.
