Celebrating the North East’s inspirational women

Time is running out to nominate the region’s most inspiring women.

Author Catherine Cookson, explorer Gertrude Bell and suffragette Emily Davison are among those who will be honoured in an exhibition later this year.

These influential women will feature in Inspirational Women of the North East (IWNE) , which will take place in the Hatton Gallery, on Newcastle University’s campus in November.

However, organisers want to know if they are any inspiring women they’ve missed out and you can nominate them via the IWNE website. You should send a photograph and an explanation about how you have been inspired to takepart@iwne.

Entries could be included in the exhibition and the winning entry will win £250. The closing date is 31 August.

The celebration is the brainchild of Newcastle University’s Professor Helen Berry (pictured). She said: “The exhibition includes well-known names from our region such as Catherine Cookson and Emily Davison, but also celebrates women who are doing great work in our community, such as a family who have run their own hairdressing business for three generations.”
