Award-winning children’s author Malorie Blackman OBE is to talk about her work at Newcastle University.

The Children’s Laureate will be in conversation with fellow author and Newcastle University professor, Jackie Kay in the event organised by the University’s Newcastle Centre for Literary Arts (NCLA).

Malorie Blackman is probably best known for popular the Noughts and Crosses series which looks at issues of racism in society. The novels depict a world in which black people, or ‘Crosses’, are the ruling elite and white people, or ‘Noughts’, are confined to minority status, denied legal rights and work in menial jobs.

In 2005, she was honoured with the Eleanor Farjeon Award in recognition of her distinguished contribution to the world of children’s books. In 2008, she was awarded with an OBE for her services to children’s literature and she became Children’s Laureate in 2013.

Professor Linda Anderson, Director of the NCLA said: “We are delighted Malorie is coming to speak. Her books for young people and children are exciting and topical and help to get them thinking about serious issues in a new way. I can’t wait to hear what she has to say.”

The event will take place on at 7.15pm on Thursday, 15 May at Northern Stage. Tickets are £6/£4 (concessions) and £2 for Newcastle University students.
