New President Elect of the British Society of Gastroenterology

Professor Colin Rees has been appointed as the new President Elect of the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG).
Colin Rees, Professor of Gastroenterology at Newcastle University and South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust, has been appointed as the new President Elect of the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG). Colin will hold the position of President Elect for two years, becoming President from 2024-2026.
Professor Rees has been an active member of the BSG for many years, holding recent Chair level roles with the Endoscopy Research Group and the Gastroenterology Covid-19 Research Group. He was Vice President (Chair of Endoscopy) of the BSG from 2015-2017 and is a National Institute for Health Research Senior Investigator.

Leading expert
Professor Rees is a leading expert in endoscopy (the procedure where organs inside the body are looked at using an instrument called an endoscope) and bowel cancer research. His work focusses on screening, prevention and early diagnosis of the disease and has led many large endoscopy studies recruiting around 15,000 patients. In 2020 he was appointed as an NIHR Senior Investigator.
Commenting on his election Colin said: "I am delighted to be appointed as President Elect of the BSG. I have worked with the society in a number of roles and found it one of the most rewarding organisations to engage with”.

The British Society of Gastroenterology is one of the world's leading gastroenterology organisations with clinical standards, research and education as its core roles. It has around 4000 members and the BSG journal, Gut, is the world leading gastroenterology journal with an Impact Factor of 33. The society produces internationally leading guidelines and annually runs one of the largest GI meetings in Europe with over 2000 delegates.
