Chinese Writers visit Newcastle University
Renowned Chinese Writers Zhenyun Liu and Hong Liang Engage in Dialogue with Newcastle University Students
On the evening of October 12, 2023, at 6:00 PM, Confucius Institute at Newcastle University (CI) hosted an insightful discussion with acclaimed Chinese writers Zhenyun Liu and Hong Liang, alongside English translator Esther Tyldesley from the University of Edinburgh. Together, they explored the intricacies of Chinese-English translation and cross-cultural communication.
The event, led by Professor Ruojuan Zheng, the Director of the CI, and moderated by Michelle Deeter, a lecturer in Chinese-to-English translation at Newcastle University, attracted over 120 attendees, including local readers, scholars, and students.
Zhenyun Liu, renowned for his novels and short stories, and Hong Liang, known for her focus on rural community stories, engaged in a dialogue that delved into the collaborative relationship between authors and translators. The conversation, facilitated by Michelle, highlighted the challenges of conveying cultural nuances and emotions in literary works, particularly when dealing with elements of Chinese rural life.
Esther Tyldesley, the English translator of "The Sacred Clan," shared insights into the meticulous process of translating unique Chinese terms, customs, and cultural elements. She emphasized the challenges and joys encountered during the translation journey.
Zhenyun Liu emphasized the profound connection between culture, language, and translation, underscoring the importance of a translator's deep understanding of the source material. He stressed that successful translation requires collaboration between the author, translator, and the characters within the story.
Michelle's discussion on cultural differences led to an exploration of a chapter in Liang Hong's work, "Swimming to the Second River," addressing the theme of suicide. Liang Hong clarified that, in a literary sense, "suicide" metaphorically represents life's turning points and emotional convergence, not its social meaning. She emphasized literature's role in prompting thoughtful contemplation.
During the Q&A session, Zhenyun Liu shared how translation enriches his understanding of different cultures and enhances the global accessibility of his works. Hong Liang emphasized that Chinese literature is an integral part of world literature, reflecting the diversity of human culture and emotions.
The event concluded with a lively book signing session, affirming Zhenyun Liu and Hong Liang's influence.
