Newcastle University Learning Analytics
Access your own data with NULA
NULA is a system that brings together information about your attendance, engagement with Canvas Course materials, and assessment submissions. Its purpose is to give you a clear, up-to-date snapshot of your learning so you can see how you’re doing, identify where you might want to focus more, and feel more in control of your studies.
This system is designed to help you and the staff who work with you – giving you insights to reflect on your progress, set goals, and have more informed, meaningful conversations with your Personal Tutor or other support teams.
Who is the system aimed at?
The learning analytics system is aimed at all Undergraduate and Post-Graduate Taught students, and staff that support students within different roles, across the university.
It is designed to give you meaningful insights into your engagement with some areas of university life. It provides a helpful snapshot to support your learning, but it may not reflect every aspect of your university experience.
What data does the system use?
The system currently uses data such as your attendance, your engagement with Canvas course materials, and your assessment submissions. The learning analytics team is also exploring additional data sources in the future to give you an even more comprehensive picture of your learning and engagement.
What does it mean by engagement?
Specifically for NULA, your engagement is how often you attend in-person sessions, how often you access Canvas course materials, and when you hand in assignments. For more information on how engagement scores are calculated, read the Metrics calculations page.
Who has access to my data?
Your data is private and only visible to you and authorised staff with academic or pastoral responsibilities that support your learning, such as your personal tutor. More information on how your data is processed can be found in the Student Privacy Notice.
What if I am having technical issues with the system?
If you are having problems such as being unable to log in, error messages, or difficulties accessing specific features, open a Service Desk ticket and the learning analytics team will investigate this for you.
What if I think my data is incorrect?
The system is designed to give an indicative snapshot of your engagement over the last two weeks. It’s there to provide real-time insights to support your learning and any conversations with your personal tutor or support teams and won’t be used in a punitive way. If something doesn’t look right, it may be due to delays in data updates or how activities are recorded. However, if you think there is an error that needs correcting please open a Service Desk ticket and the learning analytics team will investigate this for you. Please note that any errors in attendance data are not a cause for concern and will not negatively affect your academic record.
Where can I find support for my learning?
You can contact your Personal Tutor, the Academic Skills Kit team for study advice, or Student Wellbeing for personal support.
