What is NU Reflect?

NU Reflect is a system designed by the University to supports your reflective learning, as well as offer the tools to support Personal Tutoring.

Reflective practice can help you to understand your own learning processes, and to develop your awareness of your skills and abilities and evidence these, as well as support employability.

Who can access NU Reflect?

All registered students and staff at Newcastle University can access NU Reflect.

How do I access NU Reflect via Canvas?

NU Reflect is integrated in Canvas, with a landing page for NU Reflect and for Personal Tutoring and Support, both of which are accessible in Account and in any Course menu. You can both landing pages in the following ways:

  1. In Account, select NU Reflect or Personal Tutoring and Support.
  2. In any Course, select NU Reflect or Personal Tutoring and Support in the Course navigation menu.
Will all my previous activities/content in ePortfolio still be accessible?

The system has been redeveloped for improved functionality and ease of use, but all reflections, Community posts, meetings, etc., will still be accessible.

How can I learn how to use NU Reflect?

NU Reflect is designed to be easy to use and intuitive. Support will be available within NU Reflect that will provide information on how to get the best out of the system, as well as guidance on reflective practice.

My Tutor/Supervisor(s) are missing or incorrect

When you log into NU Reflect, your Personal Tutor (students on taught programmes) or Supervisor(s) (research students) will be listed in the Personal Tutoring & Support landing page. If your Tutor/Supervisor information is incorrect, please contact your School Office who will be able to amend this.

The updated information will normally feed into NU Reflect on the next working day. Any reflections you have previously shared will also be updated to reflect the change and your Tutor/Supervisor will be able to access these.

How do I control how many notifications I receive?

You can control how you receive notifications from NU Reflect. You can update these by going to Settings > Notification preferences. Notifications you can set are: 

Meetings: Invites and attendance confirmation

Reflections:

  • Comments on your posts
  • Replies to other people’s posts you have commented on
  • If you are invited to join a Community
  • Posts to Communities for which you are a member
How do I control the frequency of my notifications?

Each type of notification can be enabled/disabled by selecting the checkbox next to each preference, although you are unable to disable meeting notifications. 

The drop-down menu next to each preference can be used to select whether to receive notifications: 

  • Instantly
  • Grouped in a daily digest email
  • Grouped in a weekly digest email
What are the core components of NU Reflect?

There are two landing pages for NU Reflect:

The NU Reflect landing page provides the opportunity to record and share reflections, recognise and categorise personal skills being developed, e.g., against the Graduate Framework, and to participate in Groups and collaborate with other students in Communities.

The Personal Tutoring and Support landing page provides options to engage with tutors/tutees, create and manage individual and group meetings, and for students to access School specific and global support and guidance materials.

Why should I reflect?

Reflecting is an effective way to help you to understand your own learning processes, and to develop your awareness of your skills and abilities and evidence these, applying theoretical knowledge to real experiences, and supporting employability.
