We asked Jasmine Ralphs, a Stage 4 Linguistics and German student what she loves about being a Student Leader:

"I enjoy being a student leader as it’s a great opportunity to share my passion for my linguistics! I particularly enjoy chatting with prospective students about studying English language/linguistics and it’s always great to see the excitement on peoples’ faces as they learn more about it. The prospective students and their families are really friendly and are genuinely interested to hear a student’s perspective on studying at Newcastle.

I like the fact that there are lots of different roles that you rotate between throughout the open days; one of my favourites is welcoming people into Percy to make sure they get a good first impression of SELLL. I also enjoy giving people tours of Percy; they are always impressed with the facilities and it’s a great chance to talk about Newcastle as a whole. I love feeling like I have helped people to make a more informed choice about their future.

Being a student leader is also a great way to earn some extra money without having to make a regular commitment."

Café Assistant Role

We are recruiting a team of 3 Café Assistants to work alongside the current Café Leader. The SELLL student café (known as the Percy Café) is a space where students can socialise, read, write, collaborate on group work and grab a coffee/snack. The café is available to students and staff alike and will be run by the Café Leader alongside a team of Café Assistants.

Here is what Stage 3 Literature student Tabitha Diack enjoyed about being a Café Assistant:

Working in the Percy Café has been such a fantastic part of my second and third year. My shifts soon became one of the best parts of my week as I fostered great relationships with other students working in, and visiting the café between their lectures.

Stage 3 Literature student Jamie Sharp told us about his time working in the café:

Working in the café made me feel much more embedded on campus and with the people in the Percy building, allowing me to feel a much more meaningful sense of belonging. I have made friends with my great co-workers and with customers, and it feels great to see and speak to people on campus I wouldn't have met if not for the café.

The hourly pay for this role is £14.12.
