We offer a range of undergraduate degrees in Language and Linguistics.

Together with language and linguistics experts in the School of Modern Languages and School of Education, Communication and Language Sciences, we have one of the largest concentrations of expertise in this field within the UK.

Combined Honours

You can also combine our subjects with other humanities subjects as part of the Combined Honours degree.

Research in English Language and Linguistics

In our teaching and research, we address a range of topics to do with the structure and use of language, including:

  • syntax and semantics
  • phonology
  • sociolinguistics and discourse analysis
  • first and second-language acquisition
  • historical linguistics
  • language evolution

We pay special attention to similarities and differences across languages.
