Business, Innovation
and Partnerships

Our engineering research has been instrumental in informing policies and regulations in government.

Work with us

We have a great track record of innovating, researching, and teaching alongside industrial partners.

Some of the biggest names from industry are among our many partners. For over ten years Newcastle has been one of Siemens’ strategic Principal Partner Universities, who are part of Siemens’ co-ordinated programme of academic engagement. Other partners include:

Alongside commercial partners, our expertise and engineering research informs policy and regulation in government. Flooding, mitigating climate change impacts, expert witness, and providing public enquiry evidence are some of the other activities we undertake.

Our industry collaborations include the provision of Continuing Professional Development (CPD), collaborative projects, shared facilities, student placements, and a range of analytical and technical services.

Sustainable and resilient development

Our engineering research is enhancing the resilience of our infrastructure services and cities to extreme weather and climate change. Our new methods and technologies are improving the quality and efficiency of energy, transport, communication, flood management, water and sanitation in both the developed and developing world.

Net Zero

Our engineers are at the forefront of achieving net zero, developing new technologies for renewable energy. We are leading the way in energy storage (including batteries and fuel cells), carbon capture and storage, and low carbon materials.

Human Health

Our work has made significant improvements to wastewater treatment, air quality and remediation of pollution. We have developed technologies that are used to modify homes and transportation to enable aging populations to maintain independence. Our advanced new materials, bioengineering, and neural engineering are leading to breakthroughs in artificial joints and bionic eyes to help restore human mobility and vision.

Data, digitisation and AI

We are pioneering new data-driven approaches to engineering. We are developing new technologies, such as sensors, geospatial data acquisition and processing, smart transport and energy systems, robotics, and microprocessors designed and optimised for AI. We are working our partners through initiatives like our flagship Urban Observatory, the world’s largest set of publicly available real time urban data.

Green manufacturing and industry

Our research is underpinning the green transformation in manufacturing and industry. We are developing and innovating in new materials, additive manufacturing and 3D printing, process intensification and biofabrication. Applications range from the nanoscale, through batteries, artificial limbs and wind turbines, up to construction of the built environment. Our research is complemented by our capability to simulate complex flows and reactions in these systems using some of the world’s fastest supercomputers.

Key partnerships

Siemens

Since 2015, Newcastle has been one of Siemens’ strategic Principal Partner Universities, who are part of Siemens’ co-ordinated programme of academic engagement. Siemens are a lead partner in our energy research. The power of the partnership unlocks collaborative funding for innovative projects. Working together also ensures that our expertise has impact in the real world.

Continuing Professional Development

Our short form Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses are designed to meet the needs of organisations seeking to develop and embed skills in a quick and timely manner. These CPD courses are also devised to support individuals in industry who are looking to acquire new knowledge and skills to advance their careers.

Typically, short-form courses are more flexible than full-time programmes of study, and are particularly suited to individuals who wish to train around existing work and life commitments.

All our CPD courses are delivered by experienced staff and researchers with specialist engineering expertise. Many of our CPD courses are accredited by professional bodies or endorsed by industry partners, so you can be confident that the training you receive will be high quality, tailored to industry need, and recognised by employers.

Standard courses

We offer a range of standard CPD courses, which run throughout the academic year:

Our Institute of Electrification and Sustainable Advanced Manufacturing (IESAM) also offers a range of CPDs in Electrification:

If you would like to know more about any of these courses, please contact us for further information.
