The Electronic Transmission of Prescriptions (ETP) Pilot: Evaluation Project

Members of SBI were involved Evaluation project of the Electronic Transmission of Prescriptions (ETP) Pilot sponsored by the DH (2002-2003). The evaluation was designed to test different approaches to the transmission of prescriptions between GPs, community pharmacies and the PPA. The Department of Health (DH) commissioned three ETP pilots, which were designed and financed by the commercial sector. The three suppliers were TransScript, Pharmacy2U and Flexiscript and they provided the opportunity to test, in a live environment, the feasibility, benefits and costs of ETP data transfer. The findings from the project were used to inform the design of the ETP currently being implemented as part of the Connecting for Health programme. The reports from the project can be found at the Department of Health website.

Project Team: The work was conducted by a collaboration of Sowerby Centre for Health Informatics (SCHIN) and eHealth Horizons Ltd with the Industrial Statistics Research Unit at the University of Newcastle (ISRU), the University of Manchester School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (MSPPS) and QinetiQ.
