A milestone

The roof, external doors and windows of the Grade II listed Building, which was badly damaged by fire two years ago, are set to be replaced this autumn. The work will be the first step in bringing the building, which remains fondly remembered by students who lived there, back into use.

Jon Parker, a Senior Project Manager in Newcastle University’s Estates team said: “We’re really pleased work to repair Henderson Old Hall can begin later this year.

“It will be a big milestone on our journey to bring the hall back into use. The priority is to make sure Henderson Hall is permanently weather proofed and watertight.”

Bringing the hall back into use

The Estates Team has worked closely with the University’s insurers, who are covering the costs of repairs, as well as the local authority and consultants, to make sure the site is safe to access and to assess the extent of the fire damage.

Now that work is complete, they are tendering for a contractor to carry out the repairs which are likely to take 12-18 months to complete. 

In preparation for the repair work, contractors will be on site from Monday 16^th June, for four weeks to remove fire damaged material from the ground and first floor areas. 

Discussions about how the building will be used in the future are continuing.
