The Centre for Heritage was proud to host an online masterclass featuring three expert practitioners on the theme of 'Heritage in Africa'.

The event was attended by:

  • Gegê Leme Joseph (ICSC Program Consultant / Founder: MUCH Museums for Change)
  • Dr. Tokie Laotan-Brown (Founder: Merging Ecologies Studios UK & Ireland / Lecturer SUNY Cortland)
  • Mxolisi Makhubo (Lecturer/ Architect /AHT Convenor / Unit 24 Lead at the GS)

who joined us on Thursday 5th June to explore the ongoing movement to decolonise African heritage, address the historical context of African cultural expressions, artefacts, and narratives under colonial rule.

The session focused on the critical role of community-centered heritage management, the reclamation of indigenous knowledge systems, and the repatriation of cultural artefacts in the decolonization process.

It further emphasized the significance of interdisciplinary collaboration in advancing decolonization efforts, empowering African scholars and cultural practitioners to challenge the colonial legacies that continue to influence heritage practices.
