Dr. Evripidis Karydis is an award-winning documentary filmmaker and a Lecturer in Film Practice at Newcastle University. A dedicated practitioner of the observational mode of documentary filmmaking, the majority of his works adhere to this stylistic tradition. Evripidis has filmed, edited, and produced eight short documentary films, including 98, The Crossing, The Collector, The Port, The Picket Line, When I Die Let the Universe Burn, I Sometimes Maybe, and Trash Walk. All films have featured in prestigious film festivals winning several awards. His first feature-length documentary, Freedom Through Football, was developed as part of his PhD research project at Newcastle University. (a practice-led feature documentary film about football fan activism in Greece).
Following the completion of his MA in Sport and Media at the University of Brighton, Evripidis sought to deepen his engagement with the documentary form. He has long been captivated by the potential of sport-themed documentaries to explore complex sociological and political issues through a cinematic lens.
Evripidis's current research interests lie in the areas of activism, memory, and nostalgia, with a particular focus on the aesthetics and methodologies of observational documentary filmmaking. His work critically examines how these themes intersect within the documentary form to construct narratives that engage with socio-political discourse and contribute to broader debates in visual anthropology, cultural memory, and media studies.
Evripidis teaches on a range of modules, focusing on observational documentary practices.
