Doctoral Training Centres

Developing the research leaders of the future.

Driving innovation and investment

Our goal is to drive innovation and investment across the UK through our extensive PhD research opportunities.

Our centres and researchers are tackling some of society’s biggest challenges. They’re helping design the cities of the future, enabling the transition from fossil fuels and developing new drugs to fight disease.

Our centres are funded by the:

  • Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC)
  • Natural Environment Research Council (NERC)
  • Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC)

  • A bespoke curriculum designed to give you industry-ready skills, such as leadership, transdisciplinary skills and experiential research training
  • Direct access to industry experts
  • Access to facilities, training and support from additional partner institutions
  • Belonging to a supportive cohort environment
  • Flexibility so you can continue with any caring or family responsibilities

Each of our PhD awards include:

  • Full UK fees (UKRI rate)
  • An annual tax-free living allowance of £17,668 (minimum UKRI rate)
  • A research training grant to cover the cost of consumables, travel, conferences and more
  • Placement opportunities with industry partners

Under the UKRI terms and conditions, only UK nationals automatically qualify for a full studentship award (fees and stipend). If you’re an EU or international student, additional eligibility terms will apply. Contact the CDT for more information.
