Student experience
There are plenty of activities to get involved in while studying at Newcastle University
Student-Staff Committee
All of our programmes have a dedicated Student Staff Committee. You can apply to be a course representative, which would allow you to attend Committee meetings. You'll be responsible for representing the views of the students on your course.
Course reps meet with staff at a Student Staff Committee meeting to discuss ideas and issues. The Committee will carry out any necessary actions to come out of the meetings.
You'll also work to develop new and innovative ideas to improve the experience of students on the course.
Societies
Our Students Union has over 160 societies for you to become a member of. From hobbies and interests, to course-based societies, there’s something for everyone. We have two course-based societies in School X: the Combined Honours Society and the Philosophy Society.
Combined Honours Society
The Combined Honours Society is run for students, by students. They host a range of events such as:
- pub quizzes
- beach trips
- movie nights
- city tours
- escape rooms and
- charity fundraisers
Philosophy Society
The Philosophy Society aims to create an engaging and inclusive space for anyone interested in philosophy. This is regardless of how familiar you are with the subject or what degree you study.
There are plenty of opportunities to meet other philosophically minded students, including:
- our traditional 'Think & Drink' events
- our cafe discussion groups (for all those existentialists out there)
- pub quizzes
- a diverse range of socials
Discussion always benefits from a diversity of backgrounds and viewpoints. Everyone is encouraged to get involved.

“Newcastle lives up to its reputation for nightlife, but if that isn’t your thing there’s loads of other things going on. The city has a really interesting history, the Quayside is beautiful and there’s art galleries, theatres, cinemas, cafes and bookshops
