Young Marketers 4 the North East

Marketing and Media students given opportunity to create print and video advertisements for regional businesses

Launched on 24 October 2017 by project lead Dr Elena Chatzopoulou, Young Marketers 4 The North East invited Newcastle University Business School students to form teams create video and adverts. Two regional businesses - founded by Newcastle Alumni - Noveltea and The Travelling Bee Company provided students with a brief to create a one minute YouTube video and print quality advert for both companies.

Noveltea, founded by Business School Alumni Vincent Efferoth and Lukas Passia, combines two British classics - tea and craft spirits.

The Travelling Bee Company aims to add an educaitonal element to the production of honey, with hives located in the urban fringes of the counties of Tyne and Wear and Northumberland and in Scotland in the beautiful county of Argyll and Bute. Travelling Bee was founded by Newcastle Alumnus Mark Chambers.

The project had three main objectives, to support professional development and improve employability prospects - by giving students an opportunity to apply marketing theories taught in class to real projects - and to support local businesses' marketing needs (especially SMEs who do not have in-house marketing and communications teams). The project also offered a creative way for students to engage with local businesses and potentially develop a more in-depth and wider relationship with them.

Students had one week to create their advertisements, before finding out the successful entries at an awards ceremony which took place on Friday 3 November.

25 teams of 3 students participated, and entries were judged by a selection committee made up of academic staff from the Media School and the Business School, and Marketing staff from both Drummond Central Marketing Agency and Stark Hartley Atkinson Agency. At the awards ceremony, all entries were displayed and teams behind the best adverts were presented with awards.

Mark Chambers from The Travelling Bee Company, said:

"Once again it was a real pleasure to work alongside students from Newcastle University.Young Marketers 4 the North East gave a much needed burst of youth and innovative ideas for the business"

Vincent Efferoth from Noveltea, added:

"It is essential that students get real business experience and practice as much as possible. The 'Young Marketers 4 the North East' is a great initiative and we as Alumni and business owners are delighted to support this project with a real business case and mentoring"

This project provided vital marketing experience to students, whilst benefitting local businesses.
