6. SUMMARY OF ACTIVITIES

I am a Senior Research Associate in the School of Engineering at Newcastle University. I have been an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Shahid Beheshti University (SBU). I obtained the BSc degree from K. N. Toosi University of Technology, Tehran, Iran, in 2004, and the MSc (with High Distinction) and PhD degrees (with High Distinction) from Iran University of Science and Technology, Tehran, Iran, in 2006 and 2010, respectively, all in electrical engineering. I was also a postdoctoral researcher at the school of Engineering of Newcastle University. I also founded the SOHA Smart Energy Systems Laboratory at SBU in 2015 and directed it for 3 years. I have demonstrated a consistent track record of attracting external funds and managed several industrial projects and closely worked with several large and complex national/international projects.

Since 2018 I am with the School of Engineering at Newcastle University and manage the inteGRIDy as an EU Horizon 2020 project. I am also a senior researcher of the Active Building Centre (ABC) as a national centre of excellence, where, I lead activities in the area of control and optimisation of active buildings. The objective is to adapt and implement state of the art control and optimisation methods to optimise the profitability of energy-positive buildings through coordinating energy scheduling, including electric vehicle charging while meeting internal comfort requirements.

I am also the recipient of several International, National and Institutional Prizes. I am the recipient of the Iranian Young Professors Prize of the Vice-Presidency for Science and Technology-National Elites Foundation. I was also endorsed as an Exceptional Talent in Electrical Engineering and received the prize from the Vice-Presidency for Science and Technology-National Elites Foundation. I have won several other awards and honours, including the Best Thesis Award in Electrical Engineering (as a supervisor) from Iran Smart Homes Festival, Acknowledged Thesis Award in Electrical Engineering (as a supervisor) from Iranian Society of Smart Grids, Distinguished Researcher of the Year in electrical engineering from Iran University of Science and Technology, and placing in the Top 0.1% of the nationwide universities entrance exam of Iran Ministry of Science, Research and Technology.

I was considered as one of the Outstanding Reviewers of the IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Energy in 2019. I am also the winner of the Publons Top Peer Reviewer Award in two consecutive years of 2018 and 2019 and have been placed in Top 1% Reviewers of engineering in 2018 and engineering and cross-field in 2019. I am also the Publons Top-Handling Editor of the IET Generation, Transmission & Distribution as well as the IET Smart Grid.

My research interests are threefold: (1) Integrated Energy Systems Operation and Planning; (2) Energy Markets and Transactive Energy, (3) Energy Systems Integration. More specifically, I have worked on the smart grids, microgrids, and active buildings design, operation and economics, and what I have been most interested in over the last years is the application of advanced optimisation and machine learning algorithms in these studies. Today, I work with the focus on the whole system approach to energy and work on a broader research portfolio with the aim of clean energy systems integration into the power systems, by considering flexibility and transactive energy as key elements. I have worked with international researchers on various interdisciplinary problems in power and energy systems, economics, optimization theory, and control theory.

I am a research scientist with more than 16 years of experience in sustainable power and energy studies, 150 publications in top rank and peer-reviewed journals and conferences and 1100   citations. I have served as a Thesis Supervisor/Advisor of 77 students in the Electric Power Engineering (including 11 PhD, 40 MSc and 26 BSc students).

I am a senior member of the IEEE, member of the IEEE Power and Energy Society (PES) as well as IEEE Smart Grid Society. I am a Member of the Editorial Board and Associate Editor of IET Generation, Transmission & Distribution as well as the IET Smart Grid, Editor of Springer’s book on Active Building Energy Systems, and also serve on the Steering Committees and Technical Program Committees of several international conferences in power and energy.

RESEARCH INTERESTS

My research interests are:

(1) Integrated Power and Energy Systems Operation and Planning;

(2) Machine Learning and Advanced Optimization Techniques in Power and Energy Systems;

(3) Energy Markets and Transactive Energy;

(4) Energy Systems Integration.

More specifically, I have worked on smart grids, microgrids, and active buildings design, operation, and economics, and what I have been most interested in over the last years is the application of advanced optimization and machine learning algorithms in these studies.

Teaching

TEACHING INTERESTS

In addition to my sound research background, I have solid teaching experience as well. I have pursued every available opportunity to teach. During my graduate and postgraduate training, I was also fortunate enough to have served as a Thesis Supervisor/Co-Supervisor for 11 PhD, 40 MSc and 26 BSc students in the Electric Power Engineering.

Beyond these experiences, I am deeply committed to undergraduate teaching and postgraduate supervision. My teaching roles have included instructor, lecturer and mentor. I found that my research experience provided me with a broad view that is useful in assisting students with projects.
