Lola wins gold!

Lola Anderson, who graduated in 2018, performed brilliantly with her teammates to win a gold medal right on the line at their Olympic event.

Already a world champion, she fulfilled an Olympic dream she first set out for herself at the age of fourteen. Lola told The Guardian she found inspiration in literature when she struggled with a back injury in 2023, naming The Mountains Sing by Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai and Pachinko by Min Jin Lee as texts that inspired her determination to recover.  Her seminar leader Dr Jon Quayle, also a rower, praised Lola’s resilience and dedication:

‘I’m delighted that her degree at Newcastle University is part of her incredible journey towards Olympic gold. Congratulations Lola!’

He drew attention to Newcastle’s excellent rowing programme as an important nursery of national  talent. Lola is one of six Newcastle alumni among the forty-two rowers selected to represent Team GB in Paris.  The School sends our warmest congratulations to Lola and to her teammates, Hannah Scott, Georgie Brayshaw and Lauren Henry on their thrilling victory.
