All Students

Students should make sure their passports are signed and stamped when entering and exiting Border Controls. These stamps will prove the duration of your visit and more importantly prove to the Visa official that you have not overstayed your 90-day visit.

It is important to understand the Schengen 90/180 rule. You are allocated 90 visa free days to use within the Schengen Zone, however you must remember these are rolling days and are added onto a cumulative total of days in the Schengen region. Leaving and entering does not reset your calculator – only leaving for a period of 90 days in a non-Schengen country will reset your Visa free 90 day allowance.

British Students may need to renew your British passport in time if you’re travelling from 1 January 2021. On the day you travel, you’ll need your passport to both:

have at least 3 months left from the date you intend to leave the EU. Nevertheless, it is strongly recommended, that your passport is valid for at least 6 more months when entering Austria. This would in many cases save you from having to proof the date of your intended leave of the EU,
be less than 10 years old (even if it has six months or more left).

Study under 90 days

EU/EEA students do not need to apply for Residence permit for studies in Norway.

UK students who wish to study up to 90 days in a period of 180 days can do so without the need for a visa due to the Schengen Visa waiver.

UK Students are do not require a Visa to enter Norway for less than 90 days to complete the following activities:

Tourism
Visiting family or friends
Attending business meetings
Cultural or sports events
Short-term studying or training

Non-EU/EEA Students who are from countries requiring a visa will need to obtain a Schengen Visa.

If Students from Albania, Georgia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Ukraine, Serbia, Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan do not have a special passport they must apply for a visitors visa.

A Visitor's visa allows you to stay in Norway or other countries in the Schengen area for up to 90 days over a period of 180 days.

Gather Your Documents

Students who need to obtain a Visitors Visa need to gather the following documents:

1) Passport & Residence Permit

3) Evidence of occupation/student status
4) Evidence of sufficient funds:
5) Tickets: (Flights, Coach, train or ferry)
6) Accommodation
7) Travel insurance

How to Apply

Study over 90 days

Nationals of EU/EEA countries and Nordic countries do not need a Study Permit/Residence Permit to stay in Norway.

However upon arrival EU/EEA students will need to register with the police.

UK Students who wish to study for more than 90 days will need to apply for a Residence Permit.

How to Apply

Hand in the application and documents in person

When handing in your documents on the checklist, please go to the VFS application centre in London or Edinburgh (external website).

The VFS application centre will send your documents to the Norwegian embassy in London, United Kingdom. The embassy will send your documents to UDI.

Work in Norway

EU/EEA students do not need an additional document to work in Norway. However EU/EEA nationals can move to Norway and start working right away, but they must register with the police no later than three months after arriving in Norway. Registration is free.
Swedish, Danish, Icelandic and Finnish citizens can work in Norway without registering with the police, but they have to report a move to the National Population Register (external website).

UK Students who want to work in Norway will need a residence permit. You can read more about different types of residence permits for work and about who does not need a residence permit.
Once you have been granted a residence permit, he/she must apply for a residence card. Police stations are responsible for issuing residence cards.
If the residence permit has an expiry date, the employee/employer must apply for renewal no later than one month before the permit expires. After three years in Norway, the employee will be granted a permanent residence permit. The employer is obliged to check that the employee's residence permit is in order.

Students who wish to work in Norway must gain authorisation to work from their employer prior to applying for a Residence Permit.

By agreement with the employee, the employer can apply for a residence permit on behalf of the employee. In such case, the employer must be given authorisation.
