Working with the Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise Sector
Supporting social innovation, community wellbeing and inclusive change.
A civic anchor institution, committed to social impact
Social justice and public benefit sit at the heart of Newcastle University’s mission. We work in partnership with VCSE organisations to support:
- health equity and wellbeing
- ageing and later‑life quality of care
- community resilience and inclusion
- climate and environmental justice
- cultural participation and creative communities
This work is shaped by long‑standing relationships across the North East and beyond. We draw on the knowledge and experience of communities as equal partners, recognising lived experience as expertise.
Practical support for VCSE partners
We support VCSE organisations across a wide range of activity, including:
- evaluation and impact measurement: helping demonstrate outcomes and value
- co‑design of services: working with communities to shape effective, inclusive solutions
- community‑based research: evidence generation rooted in lived experience
- social innovation and inclusive economy projects: exploring new models of delivery and collaboration
- behavioural insight and policy translation: turning research into practical change
- digital skills and transformation: building confidence, capability and capacity
- access to student volunteers and placements: connecting organisations to skills, energy and new perspectives
Projects can range from small, exploratory pieces of work through to longer‑term partnerships.
Accessible, values‑aligned collaboration
We understand that VCSE organisations often work within tight resource and capacity constraints. Our approach is flexible, proportionate and designed to be supportive rather than burdensome.
That means meeting your organisation ‘where you are’ to:
- work at an appropriate pace and scale
- avoid unnecessary complexity
- focus on outcomes that matter to you and your stakeholders
Our goal is collaboration that feels constructive, respectful and genuinely useful.
Building capability and confidence
Beyond individual projects, we help VCSE partners build longer‑term capability through:
- CPD and short courses
- training for boards, trustees and leaders
- toolkits and practical resources
- knowledge‑exchange and learning programmes
- student‑supported research and placements
This supports organisations not just to deliver today, but to plan, adapt and thrive over time.
Long‑term, place‑based relationships
Much of our work with the VCSE sector is rooted in place, particularly across the North East of England, and built on trust developed over time.
Examples of impact include collaborative work in:
- health inequalities and healthy ageing
- social care and later‑life living
- refugee, migrant and asylum‑seeking communities
- community culture, heritage and creative practice
- climate action and environmental resilience
These partnerships reflect our belief that the strongest social innovation emerges when universities, communities and civil society work together as equals.
