Introduction
I joined the department of Media, Culture, Heritage in the School of Arts and Cultures at Newcastle University as a lecturer in Journalism in September 2015. Prior to this I was the Programme Leader for the BJTC, Creative Skillset and NCTJ accredited BA (Hons) Broadcast Journalism degree at the University of Sunderland for almost 9 years. I came to academia as a radio journalism practitioner, working as Deputy Head of News for a Sony Gold Award winning news team in the North East. Before I joined the news team I held a variety of roles including producer for a late night phone-in and a football commentary/ phone-in programme.

My research interests are around the changing nature of the broadcast newsrooms, in particular the implementation of newsroom hubs in commercial radio stations and the impact on newsroom practice. I am interested in the localness of local radio news output and audience perceptions. I have also studied the Raoul Moat manhunt in relation to the implications of user generated content during a media blackout and the blurred lines of social media when journalists live Tweet. My earlier co-authored research into the mediatization of falling in love gave me an understanding of the importance of media technologies during courtship as well as an introduction to research methodologies for academic purposes.
