Skills and Attributes Toolkit

For life, for work, for your future success.

Skill up for your future

Your future will be built on more than qualifications.

It’ll be influenced by your creativity, adaptability and drive to keep learning and growing. It’ll be powered by the skills, experience, and qualities that set you apart.

Our Skills and Attributes toolkit can help you discover your strengths, unlock new skills and gain the confidence to achieve your goals.

Whether you want to develop your career, start your own business, or shape the person you become tomorrow, this is where your journey begins.

What is the Skills and Attributes toolkit?

Our toolkit is backed by our research into the future of work. We’ve designed it around the 15 core skills and attributes, grouped into 3 categories, which employers tell us they want in our graduates.

These skills and attributes will help you:

  • pursue excellence in everything you do
  • apply creativity to solving the problems of today and tomorrow
  • make an impact, whatever path you follow

Why develop your skills and attributes?

The graduates who stand out aren’t always the ones who’ve done the most.

Instead, they’re the ones who know the value of what they’ve learned - gained through their studies, extracurricular activities, volunteering, work experience, part-time jobs or personal projects.

They can demonstrate their abilities with confidence. They can show the impact they’re ready to make.

Our toolkit will help you develop and showcase your skills and attributes. But it’ll also do much more.

It’ll empower you to thrive - personally and professionally - at university and beyond.

How you'll skill up

We don’t expect you to have all these skills and attributes when you join us.

Instead, you’ll get the chance to build them through your studies, extracurricular activities and wider experience at Newcastle.

1. Your starting point

Supported by our Careers Service and your Academic Adviser (formerly personal tutor) you will:

2. Your Progress

Record your goals and track your development with My Progress, the University’s online platform (available from September). Your Academic Adviser and our careers experts will help you on your skills journey.

3. Your opportunities

Connect your interests and development with activities across the University and our Students’ Union.

4. Beyond your degree

Outside of your course there are countless opportunities to develop your skills and attributes including:

  • playing sport
  • volunteering in the community
  • taking on a student leadership role
  • working part-time
  • taking part in enterprise and innovation activities
  • engaging in extracurricular projects

What makes us different?

At Newcastle, the skills and attributes you’ll gain will be embedded across your academic, professional and personal growth. They’re not optional extras.

They’ll be the bedrock of your experience with us. They’ll guide your journey and help define your success.

Your skills. Your future. Sorted.
