Become a Volunteer Project Training Officer

North East Solidarity North East Solidarity and Teaching (NEST) is a multi-award-winning, student-led project based at Newcastle University Students’ Union. NEST supports refugees and people seeking asylum across the region through English language provision and community-focused sessions.

Running five days a week and welcoming learners of all ages, NEST aims to create an inclusive and supportive environment where participants can develop their English skills, build confidence, and access support to help them integrate into society.

As a NEST (Schools) Training Officer you will support the Schools Project volunteer training and refreshers, covering behaviour management across ages and SEND needs, safeguarding, learning theories, and additional topics to build volunteer confidence. In this role you will:

  • support the development and training for NEST Schools volunteers throughout the year, including initial induction and refresher sessions between terms
  • design and facilitate engaging training on key areas such as behaviour management strategies for different age groups and SEND needs, safeguarding practices, and relevant theories of learning
  • respond to volunteer feedback, creating sessions on topics that build confidence and effectiveness in their roles
  • help equip volunteers with practical skills and knowledge
  • help ensure a safe, supportive, and high-quality learning environment for all pupils

This is an ideal opportunity for anyone interested in teaching, education or working in the charity sector.
