Living in your community

Read our advice on being a good neighbour, socialising responsibly, staying safe and looking after your local area.

28 September 2026

If you're living in private accommodation, please read the guidance offered by the University for students living in the local community.

Please introduce yourselves to your new neighbours in the coming days and weeks and, as you settle in, please treat your neighbours with kindness, consideration and respect.

Day to day living

We want you to participate in community life safely and responsibility.

Students living in the community often live in multi-occupancy houses and, the more students in a household, the more chance of inadvertent day-to-day noise.

Please be mindful of noise levels and be considerate around parking and ask visitors to your home to do the same.

Mindful socialising

Please be considerate to your neighbours when in your accommodation, moving around the area, and disposing of litter.

Your social life is a vital part of the university experience, but it shouldn't negatively impact your neighbours.

Your neighbours may be other students with deadlines to meet, older adults, have health issues, or have young children or pets.

Staying safe

We want you and your friends to have fun, but also to be safe when socialising.

For advice on staying safe, please visit the Student Health and Wellbeing webpages.

You can download SafeZone, a free app available to our students and colleagues which will connect you directly to our security team if you need help on campus.

Litter

Please help keep the community tidy and manage your household waste and bin collections.

If you’re socialising, dispose of your litter responsibly and keep Newcastle clean.

Broken glass left on paths and roads can cause injury to people and pets.

If you want to get involved in your local community, Keep Jesmond Clean support monthly neighbourhood litter picks and can provide all the equipment you need.

The majority of our students make really positive contributions to the local community and don't set out to cause a disturbance, but we do receive more complaints on noise and behaviour at this time of year.

If we receive a report about your household, the University will need to contact you in accordance with the Student Conduct Disciplinary Procedure and it could lead to a fine, a warning or something more serious for students in the household.

We do hope you enjoy living in the community and good luck for the coming year!
