Increased physical activity and glucose control: Developing a framework for clinical application in Type 2 diabetes.

This work investigates the change in muscle metabolism using 1H, 31P and 13C MR spectroscopy during the introduction of increased daily physical activity. The initial phase of this work involves the development of a behaviour modification strategy for use in the primary care setting. Accurate measurement of daily energy expenditure using accelerometers is integral to the necessary demonstration of sustainability of day to day physical activity patterns. 31P Saturation transfer MRS has been developed to examine muscle ATP synthesis rates.
