Celebrating a century of women’s activism and voice in Newcastle

Date/Time: Tuesday 6th - Friday 9th February 2018

Venue: Grainger Market, Newcastle upon Tyne

2018 celebrates the centenary of the Representation of the People Act which began the process of women’s suffrage (women over the age of 30 who owned property were given the vote but it was not until 1928 that universal suffrage for women was achieved). The Women’s 100 is marking the occasion with a range of activities which celebrate women’s political voice and activism. The Story Box is one of these projects.

We would like to hear about the women who have made, or are making, a difference in your community, your city or more widely, using their voice and energy to campaign for a better tomorrow. If you know of a woman (a family member, a friend, a neighbour or indeed any woman) who is making a difference in the lives of others, we would love you to tell us about her.

Your stories will be gathered together and become an archive on the Women’s 100 webpage.

All you have to do is enter the Story Box, follow the instructions and record your story. We will be on hand to help you!

The Story Box will be installed in Grainger Market (by the plant stand at the back of the market by Nun Street entrance) on the anniversary of the Representation of the People Act, 6 February (10am – 4pm). We hope to see you there: we will be waiting to hear your stories.

From 7th to 9th February, the Story Box will become a one-person cinema where you can see short films that local people have made about their lives in Newcastle. The Story Box project was created by Curiosity Creative – see here for further details.
