Exploring how circular systems can support secure, sustainable supplies of the critical materials needed for a low-carbon future.

About the network

The Critical Materials Circularity Network (CMCN) explores how circular systems for critical materials can be designed, governed and scaled in practice.

Materials such as lithium, cobalt and rare earths are essential to electrification and low-carbon technologies. However, current linear models of production and consumption present challenges for their secure, affordable and sustainable supply.

Our interdisciplinary network investigates how materials and products can remain in use for longer, how circular supply chains can be developed and how organisations can make the transition to more responsible and resilient systems.


What we do

Circular supply chains

We examine take-back systems, reverse logistics, capacity planning and partnerships that can help create more resilient circular value chains.

We explore second-life applications, product-service systems, ownership models and new ways to create and capture value from materials and products.

Digitalisation and governance

We investigate traceability, digital product and material passports, and how organisations can develop more responsible and transparent supply chains.

Measurement, finance and policy

We consider material flow and carbon accounting, cost-benefit analysis, ESG assurance, investment mechanisms and the regulatory frameworks needed to support circular systems.

Through this work, we aim to support industrial innovation and environmental sustainability, contributing to regional development in the North East and wider efforts towards supply security and net zero.


Who we are

The network brings together researchers from Newcastle University and collaborators with expertise spanning operations, supply chain management, sustainability, work and employment, accounting, marketing and engineering.
