Using comics to help children understand medical procedures
Developing the use of comics in patient information within clinical contexts at Great North Children’s Hospital
- Project Dates: Start date: 2017 End date: 2021
- Project Leader: Lydia Wysocki
- Staff: Lydia Wysocki (Co-I) and Janice McLaughlin (Co-I)
- Sponsors: Wellcome ISSF (NU); Great North Children’s Hospital Foundation
- Partners: Matthew Thomas, Lee McKay, Victoria Mitchinson, Sarah Branfoot
Background
This project has two strands:
1. MRI. We will work with the GNCH MRI team and parents/carers of child MRI patients to evaluate the use of a bespoke comic (created earlier in our project) about what it is like to have an MRI scan. This will improve paediatric patient information through creative practice innovations in collaboration with healthcare professionals.
Project subtitle: 'Evaluating using comics to inform children about having an MRI scan'.
2. Vents. We will develop meaningful ways to involve young patients and their families in partnership with clinical staff to develop patient information about using ventilation equipment. This process will result in the creation of a comics-form patient information booklet with key messages about using ventilation equipment, for use in clinical and home settings and build interdisciplinary working relations between researchers and clinical staff, which will support expansion of the work into a significant area of research.
Project subtitle: 'Remind me why this helps me breathe: co-producing patient information materials with GNCH ventilation patients and staff'
