Research Funding Schemes
We are committed to developing the postgraduate community in the School. This is reflected in the generous research support available to our postgraduate students.
Funding
In addition to free printing and computing facilities the School provides a series of competitive support funds.
All postgraduate research students are notified by email and are invited to apply for this funding twice a year. The applications are considered by a committee chaired by the PG Director and funding is awarded accordingly.
Writing-Up Fund
Up to £1,000 per student is available to assist postgraduates in the final stages of their PhD in circumstances of financial hardship.
PhD Fund
The PhD Fund is to support:
(1) conducting research in archives or libraries, fieldwork or data collection;
(2) giving papers at conferences, symposia, seminars and workshops not hosted at Newcastle University;
(3) research training;
(4) obtaining permissions for publications and the digitisation of research-related materials;
(5) participant payments (with a limit of £10 per person per 12 months);
(6) costs incurred in an aspect of research or writing up resulting from a condition identified in a Student Support Plan. Applicants applying for funding related to costs incurred in an aspect of research or writing up resulting from a condition identified in a Student Support Plan should find out whether they are eligible for support through the Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSA) scheme. See: Funding | Student Wellbeing | Newcastle University
Students can claim up to £300 per year for conference attendance or fieldwork expenses in the UK; and up to £1000 for international.
