Equality and Diversity

We provide a fair and supportive working environment for all our staff and students.

Our School community

We're committed to ensuring that opportunities are open to everyone and that all are able to flourish and succeed.

It's important that each member of our school community feels valued and respected. Members should feel that they are able to achieve their potential both within the School and the University.

To help support this, we have our own GPS Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee. The committee supports our commitment to meeting the guidelines set out in our School Equality Charter Awards.

We aim to:

  • help to shape and deliver a positive culture
  • enable our colleagues and students to achieve their potential and celebrate our diversity
  • raise the profile and priority of EDI within GPS
  • promote dignity, respect and equitable treatment across our working and learning community
  • promote best practice for greater equality, inclusion and diversity in all aspects of school life.

Athena SWAN Bronze Award

Our School achieved an Athena SWAN Bronze award in September 2017.

The Athena SWAN Charter recognises the commitment of institutions and departments to:

  • address gender equalities
  • tackle the unequal representation of women in higher education
  • improve career progression for female academics

Newcastle University was successful in achieving a Silver institutional award in April 2016. We are one of only nine institutions in the UK to hold a Silver award, demonstrating the impact of our activities.

Newcastle is an inclusive community where everyone is treated with dignity and respect.
