Entry requirements
Those applying to be an Occasional Postgraduate Researcher in Geography, Politics or Sociology must normally meet our standard entry requirements. This means you must hold at least a 2:1 honours degree and/or a master’s degree in a relevant subject.
If your first language is not English, you'll also need IELTS 7.0 or equivalent.

Once we have agreed to your visit in principle, you must register as an occasional student and apply online. In the section on Programme of Study, include that you are applying for ‘PG Occasional Students in SSCI ’ status and select the programme code '2762O'.
You will not receive an award or credit from Newcastle University for your studies. The normal maximum length for Occasional Postgraduate Researchers is 12 months.
Resources
Occasional research students will have access to school resources for the duration of their registration, which typically includes;
- an introductory meeting with the appointed internal supervisor and monthly meetings to discuss and review work-in-progress
- opportunities to consult with other academic staff postgraduate researchers
- access to desk space
- access to computing facilities
- access to Newcastle University library; attend School seminars and other research events, as appropriate
- an opportunity to attend MA and Faculty research training sessions, in agreement with the degree programme director
